America Needs Unions

An article written by the Detroit news by Brandon Brzys is a really good read and makes sense.

Column: America needs Unions

“Too many working moms and dad are struggling in today’s economy and don’t feel like they can ever get ahead. Too many Americans (and Canadians)  don’t have the power to negotiate a fair wage for honest work.”

Labour Day and Picnic

Labour Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers. Having a union on your side makes your job and your workplace safer and fairer. You get paid better and are more likely to have benefits that help you balance work with life at home. Workers in unions are an important part of the local community and economy because that’s where they spend their paycheques. Their incomes support local businesses (who create local jobs) and bolster the local tax base, which supports public works and community services that add to everyone’s quality of life. When unions stand up for fairness, they raise the bar for everyone. Many of the things first won by unions are enjoyed by all workers today – minimum wages, overtime pay, workplace safety standards, maternity and parental leave, vacation pay, and protection from discrimination and harassment.

CUPE Local 101 is affiliated with the London District Labour Ciuncil. Please join us on September 3, 2017at Thames Park for the annual Labour Day Picnic hosted by the London District Labour Council from 12 pm until 4 pm.

United Way Backpack Drive

Hope you are all having an amazing summer. I know we don’t want to yet think about fall, but here at United Way we are getting ready for back to school with our GenNext ‘Best First Day’ Backpack Drive. Every year the need grows and this year is no different. We have had a request to support the children from the First Nations, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) schools in our area this impacts approximately 350 kids, but this is an all or nothing situation and the need is staggering. We need to collect an extra 350 backpacks- can you help us make this the ‘best first Day ever’?

Please let me know if you are able to help with collecting backpacks and school supplies. For more information, posters, how-to guides, and items we are collecting, please visit: http://unitedwaylm.ca/gennext/backpack-drive/

Thank you for considering helping out.

London Pride Parade

Come on out and walk with your brothers and sisters of Cupe 101 this Sunday July 30 in the London Pride Parade.

The parade starts at 12:30 from the Western Fair Ground, so please come at 12:00 for easy set up. The theme this year is super heroes. Come as your favourite super hero or create your own.

Our meeting place will be near the casino.

Helpful hints for those who are coming, have good walking shoes and cool omfortable wear, leave a vehicle downtown near Victoria Park for ease of getting back to the fair grounds for other cars.

Hope to see you there!
